Continuing Lobster week and stepping a year earlier with this one. All the covers back then started as watercolor thumbnails. That was a pretty satisfying way to figure things out, as well as a good method of keeping it simple in terms of color.
Back then covers were the only part of the book I colored myself (the interiors were colored by Dave Stewart), so more Mars stuff:
And the printed cover is a good window into what I could influence (hand-drawn title) and what I could not (credits not being tilted and above the title; that orange claw in the middle of an entirely red cover).
